No injuries reported after massive fire at local diesel company
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – No injuries have been reported after a massive fire at a diesel automotive repair business in Northwest Charlotte. It happened around 8:20 Tuesday night. When fire crews arrived, Battalion Chief Michael says people were inside the building, but they were able to get out.
“We made a really aggressive interior search of the building to make sure there were no trapped occupants,” Battalion Chief Gerin said.
Battalion Chief Gerin says there were many flammable materials inside the diesel business, but fire crews worked quickly to put out the flames before anything ignited.
“Our concerns are whether or not there was runoff diesel fuel into the into the groundwater. Mecklenburg County EPA is on the way just to ensure that there is no threat to the environment. Along with that, our hazmat team is also working with the building representative to make sure that there is no runoff, and we’re doing our best to contain any of those chemicals that may or may not have entered the creek,” Battalion Chief Gerin said.
When the structure is safe, fire investigators will enter the building to find the cause of the fire and the survey the extent of the damages.
Battalion Chief Gerin says people in the area might notice some lingering smoke in the air, but he says it is not a cause for concern.
