Alcohol Plays Role in Deadly Overnight Crash

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Officers are investigating a deadly overnight crash at Atando Avenue, where alcohol appears to have been a factor.

On Tuesday, January 09, 2018 at 12:35 a.m., officers responded to a single motor vehicle crash in the 1200 block of Atando Avenue near Timeplanner Drive. Upon arrival, officers located a 1996 Buick passenger motor vehicle just off the roadway. Medics arrived and pronounced the victim, Kutana Nesbitt, deceased on scene at 12:48 a.m. One of the passengers, Brenda Jean Kearse, was transported to Presbyterian hospital with serious injury. Two other passengers, Shakeela Monique Williams and Jermaine Lamont Walls, sustained minor injury and were treated on scene.

Officers say the preliminary investigation indicates that the 1996 Buick, driven by Nesbitt, was traveling east on Atando Avenue. As the Buick entered a curved section of the roadway, it began to travel off the roadway to the right striking a raised curb. After striking the curb and traveling off the roadway, the Buick then struck a tree and overturned. Speed does not appear to be a contributing factor; however, alcohol does.
