Warm & windy Wednesday, cooler to close workweek

We'll see a few chances for rain (and snow) over the weekend into early next week, but no washouts are in the forecast.

Happy Hump Day! Get ready for the warmest air we’ve seen in two weeks this Wednesday afternoon as highs swell into the mid-70s across the Piedmont and Foothills. We’ll have abundant sunshine and stiff southwesterly breezes to thank for the mercury rising 5-10° above average today, but a dry cold front sweeps through overnight, cutting down temperatures as we close out the workweek. Highs will end up closer to 70° on Thursday and Friday around the Metro as the dry times continue.

A second front cuts through the Carolinas by Friday night, and this one will actually have some rain associated with it. While most of the moisture will get hung up over the Appalachians, a few isolated showers may sneak into the Piedmont between sunset Friday and sunrise Saturday. Despite the passage of two cold fronts in as many days, temperatures will swell further into the mid-70s for many in the Piedmont and Foothills for the first day of November’s second weekend.

Don’t get used to the newfound warmth, though. An Arctic upper-level low will slide in behind a *third* cold front by Sunday night, bring a major cold snap to the WCCB Charlotte viewing area by the start of next week. Models are still hashing out exactly how much moisture will be supported by this system, but the European brings the first measurable snowfall of the season for most in the High Country and even a few flurries for the I-40 corridor in the Piedmont and Foothills. The big story for the lower elevations, however, will be the cold. Highs will struggle to clear the 20s, 30s, and 40s Monday afternoon across the board as the Metro settles in for its first hard freeze by Tuesday morning.
