Cooler finish to workweek, warmer weekend with modest rain chances
The first major cold snap of the season arrives by this coming Monday.
Happy Friday Eve! Despite a mild start to the morning, temperatures will struggle to rise much above average this Thursday afternoon in the wake of yesterday’s cold front. Highs will climb into the 50s and 60s across the board, although a few spots around the Metro and southeastward could crack 70Β° for this penultimate day of the workweek. The mercury will be on the ascent again on Friday, however, as stiff southwesterly breezes return ahead of our second cold front in three days. This incoming system will bring more moisture along with it than the last one, but that’s a very low bar to clear. While a few showers will sneak their way into the Piedmont Friday night, most of the rain will get hung up in the High Country.
Ironically, temperatures will only warm after the front passes through; highs likely soar into the upper 60s and 70s across the board on Saturday. The warmth appears poised to carry through the second half of the weekend, but rain chances rise once again on Sunday as yet another cold front slices through the Carolinas. We’re watching for a low-end severe threat on Sunday as a few heavy, gusty storms may develop along the front, but no washouts are in the forecast.
Stay weather-wise for our first real taste of winter this season as a major cold snap follows behind this weekend’s system. Highs may struggle to clear the 20s, 30s, and 40s across the WCCB Charlotte viewing area on Monday as an Arctic upper-level low dives across the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic. Many locations in the High Country will see their first measurable snowfalls of the season between Monday morning and Tuesday afternoon. The European model continues to point at a few snow flurries making it into the NC Piedmont Monday night into Tuesday morning, but don’t expect any accumulations outside of the mountains. Regardless of what comes down from the sky, the Queen City can expect its first hard freeze of the season Monday night as Tuesday morning’s lows dip into the 20s
