York County Detective Fighting for Life after Four Law Enforcement Officers Shot

YORK, SC – A York County detective is fighting for his life after a suspect opened fire, hitting him and three other officers. It happened during the search for a man accused of domestic violence.

The community came together for an prayer vigil Tuesday night.

Investigators were called to Farrier Lane for a domestic violence call late Monday night. Police say the suspect, 47-year-old Christian McCall ran, then fired, hitting a deputy trying to track him with a bloodhound.

“We had gotten the call and said that they were out, looking for a man with a gun and we were to stay in our homes,” says neighbor Barbara Hammond.

Around 3:30 in the morning, Sheriff Kevin Tolson says McCall then ambushed officers searching for him.

“I heard the shots and they were very rapid, ‘pow, pow, pow, pow, pow..,’” Hammond explains.

Investigators say York County Sheriff’s Deputy Mike Doty was critically injured. Sergeants Randy Clinton and Buddy Brown, along with York Police Sergant Kyle Cummings were all hurt, but are expected to recover.

“We could really use a lot of prayer and thoughts from the members of our community,” says Trent Faris, with the York County Sheriff’s Office.

The suspect McCally is also in the hospital after being shot in the exchange. Records show he was arrested in 1994, in Florence, South Carolina, for assault and battery and resisting an officer.

He’s expected to be charged with multiple counts of attempted murder.

Now people in the community say they’re just praying for the officers’ recovery.

“They’re not at home with their families and their families are hurting,” says Jack Logan, with the organization Put Down the Guns Young People.

During the exchange of gunfire, investigators say McCally also shot at at SLED helicopter, hitting it, but it was still able to fly and no one was hurt.
