Chilly & soggy Tuesday morning, keeping an eye on Friday

Most of the lower elevations will see another disappointing cold rain on Friday, but a few wet flakes are squarely on the table for those along I-40 and northward.

No one likes a cold rain, but we desperately need the moisture sweeping across the drought-stricken Carolinas this Tuesday morning. Scattered showers will continue past sunrise before drying out and some clearing arrives in the afternoon as highs approach 50Β° across the Piedmont and Foothills. Most of the WCCB Charlotte viewing area will wake up to freezing temperatures Wednesday morning before plentiful sunshine warms us up near 50Β° again around the Metro. The mercury will rise slightly higher on Thursday as southwesterly winds bring lower 50s to the Queen City. While rain chances remain at bay throughout your penultimate day of the workweek, clouds will build into the afternoon and evening ahead of our next storm system – and this one is worth watching if you’re a snow-lover.

To be clear… Friday’s system looks like another disappointing chilly rain across much of the Piedmont and Foothills. That said, there’s still plenty of time for change, and some spots along I-40 and northward could see some wet flakes and sleet pellets mix in early before transitioning to all rain as we head throughout the day. This looks like a bona fide winter-weather setup for the Carolinas – high pressure to the north, storm track just southeast of I-85 – but we simply don’t have enough cold air filtering in from the northeast for snow in the immediate Metro as it stands right now. Highs will struggle to clear the upper 30s around the Charlotte area Friday afternoon, just warm enough to keep things wet rather than wintry. As always, the best chance for accumulating snow lies in the High Country as we close out the workweek. The weekend ahead looks cool, dry, and mostly sunny as highs hang around 50Β° across the Piedmont and Foothills.
