Police: Belmont school resource officer arrested in McDonald’s drive-thru line

BELMONT, N.C. (News Release) — On Friday, December 5, 2025, at approximately 12:30 a.m., Belmont Police officers were dispatched to a call reporting a motorist unconscious in a vehicle in the drive-thru lane of McDonald’s at 505 N. Main Street in Belmont.

When officers arrived, they discovered off-duty Belmont Police Officer James Reagan asleep in the driver’s seat of his personal vehicle.

A field investigation determined that Reagan was impaired at the time of the incident. Officers arrested Reagan and charged him with Driving While Impaired (DWI).

Reagan was assigned as a Belmont Police School Resource Officer and has been with the department since September 26, 2014.

Police Chief Boyce Falls called the arrest concerning. “Officers are expected to conduct themselves to a high standard on and off duty. When someone falls short of that, they will be held accountable.”

Reagan has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the criminal investigation and the Belmont Police Department’s internal review.
