Burke County Man Arrested For Carrying Gun On School Property While Squirrel Hunting

CASAR, NC — A 47-year-old man says he was squirrel hunting Monday after being arrested with an air rifle on school property.

Tommy Houston was charged with Possession of a Gun on Educational Property after someone reported him walking toward Freedom High School carrying a rifle with a scope around 11:30am. Freedom High’s Resource Officer found Houston on the school’s driving range, and ordered him to drop the weapon.

Deputies say the rifle was a .22 caliber Benjamin Prowler air rifle, which Houston said he was using to squirrel hunt.

To ensure no students or staff were at risk, Freedom High was placed on a brief lock down that only lasted about eight minutes.
