Wet & windy Thursday, sunny weekend ahead

Happy Friday Eve! We’re one week away from Christmas, but conditions look decidedly wet rather than wintry today. Rain chances pick up shortly after sunrise as an expansive rainmaking system approaches from the west. Scattered showers this Thursday morning become even more widespread in the afternoon and evening; washout conditions are in the forecast as we wrap up the day. Despite the wet and gray day, temperatures will increase overnight into Friday as winds pick up from the southwest; highs this evening cruise into the upper 50s around the Metro as gusts approach 30 mph. Most locations in the WCCB Charlotte viewing area will pick up anywhere between Β½” and 1Β½” over the next 24 hours.
The rain slowly tapers off early Friday morning as the incoming system’s corresponding cold front sweeps through the Carolinas. While a few stray showers may linger into the early daylight hours, most of the moisture clears eastward by sunrise Friday. Scattered northwesterly flow flurries are possible in the High Country as we kick off the final day of the workweek, but the Piedmont and Foothills enjoy abundant sunshine as highs hang around the mid-to-upper 50s. Lows dip near freezing Saturday morning in the Metro before a major warm-up returns on Sunday; afternoon temperatures cruise into the mid-to-lower 60s in the Queen City as we wrap up the final weekend before Christmas.
Another cold front slices through the Carolinas by Sunday evening, bringing colder temperatures into the holiday week, but not much in terms of moisture. While Santa’s big week gets off to a chilly start, highs surge well above average by Christmas Eve as the mercury approaches 70Β° in Charlotte. Needless to say, our white Christmas chances will be near 0% as abundant sunshine dominates the Carolina skies for the holidays.
