SHELBY, NC — A Cleveland County woman has been charged with murder after officials say she killed her mom with a meat cleaver early Friday morning.
Deputies say they were called to a home on Stony Point Road around 3:40am in reference to an individual with possible psychiatric problems. While en route, another 911 call was placed from the same address by a woman claiming someone was trying to kill her.
When deputies arrived, they say they found 51-year-old Martha Hargett lying in the front yard. Her daughter, 29-year-old Melinda Hargett, was reportedly carrying a meat cleaver when she came out of the house.
Deputies say they ordered Melinda to drop the clever several times at gunpoint before she finally complied and was taken into custody.
Melinda Hargett is charged with Murder, and has been transported to Central Prison in Raleigh under no bond.
