CHARLOTTE, N.C. — At least one person has been arrested after a hit-and-run accident led to a shootout on the UNC Charlotte campus early Saturday morning.
According to a UNC Charlotte alert, on March 3, 2018, around 2:15 a.m., there was an automobile accident at the Waffle House located on North Tryon Street.
Officials say no one involved was affiliated with UNC Charlotte and there was no threat to the campus.
A vehicle occupied by four individuals failed to stop at the scene of the accident.
The victim of the accident followed the vehicle occupied by the four individuals onto the UNC Charlotte campus. One of the people in the vehicle occupied by the four individuals shot at the victim of the hit-and-run accident near Lot 27 on the Charlotte campus.
The driver of the hit and run vehicle shot back but no one exited their vehicle and no one was injured during the exchange of fire.
UNC Charlotte Police talked with the victim of the hit-and-run accident at the scene, and learned that CMPD had stopped the vehicle occupied by the four individuals.
The victim had been communicating with CMPD throughout the incident and told police vehicle information about the alleged suspects after the accident at the Waffle House.
The suspects were taken into custody off campus on J.W. Clay Blvd. Jaylen Coad was arrested and charged with Possession of Marijuana, Possession of Marijuana Paraphernalia, and Driving While License Revoked.
CMPD is continuing to investigate and more information will be released as it develops.
