CMPD Charges Sex Offender In 1990 And 1994 Sexual Assault Cold Cases

CHARLOTTE, N.C. —  A Charlotte man has been arrested for his involvement in two sexual assaults that occurred in 1990 and 1994.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Cold Case Sexual Assault Unit arrested Warren Caldwell, 56, on March 1st, 2018.

Caldwell is charged with two counts of Second Degree Rape, Common Law Robbery, and one count of First Degree Kidnapping.

DNA evidence collected at the time of the assaults and tested in 2017 led to Caldwell as the suspect in both cases.

A registered sex offender, Caldwell was convicted in 2002 for Indecent Liberties with a Child, stemming from a 1995 case.   He has been arrested over 50 times for various offenses.

Police say on October 16th, 1990, an 18-year-old victim told police that a man sexually assaulted her and robbed her in the 1400 block of Samuel Street.

On February 4, 1994, a 17-year-old victim told police that a man pulled up next to her in a car while she was waiting at a bus stop on North Tryon Street.  The suspect forced her into the vehicle and drove to another location before sexually assaulting her  and letting her go.
