Accidental apartment fire in east Charlotte leads to death investigation

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — CMPD is conducting a death investigation after firefighters located a body while evacuating residents during an east Charlotte apartment fire.

Firefighters working to evacuate residents found the woman’s body inside an apartment adjacent from the fire, according to Charlotte Fire.

The blaze broke out just before 7am on January 28th at an apartment complex on Sharon Chase Drive. This is just off N. Sharon Amity near Shamrock Road.

The fire was caused by an electrical issue and deemed accidental, according to a police report. Officials do not think the fire and the death are connected.

Officials say the fire caused approximately $170,000 in damage.
