Man Charged With Shooting Grandfather In Shelby

SHELBY, N.C. — Police say a man has been charged with shooting his grandfather in Shelby.  Officers say they responded after receiving a report of a car crashing into a building and shots being fired.

Once officers arrived on the scene, they determined that the driver of the car, Carl McWhirter, had been shot.  McWhirter was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Officers quickly determined that the suspect was McWhirter grandson, Camden McWhirter.  Police say Camden was located across the street at his residence on Lafayette Street but refused to come out.

The SWAT team responded and after six and a half hours the suspect came out of the residence without further incident.  He was arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.
