CHARLOTTE, NC — Police have identified the driver killed Tuesday afternoon after his car went over a bridge in northwest Charlotte and landed on it’s side 20 feet below.
The accident happened around 3:36pm on Mt. Holly Road near Chattaroy Drive. Medic says 20-year-old Benjamin Max Jones was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to reports, Jones was driving a 2002 Nissan Altima when he ran off the road, hit a concrete guard rail and overturned into a creek 20 feet below. Investigators say he was not wearing a seat belt and was partially thrown from the car.
Jones was driving normally until his vehicle ran off the road, according to witnesses, and bystanders tried to administer first aid before emergency crews arrived.
Police say neither alcohol or speed appear to be a factor in the crash. The investigation is ongoing.
