Winter roars back

More rain chances return by the end of the workweek, but drought conditions will likely continue to worsen across the Carolinas.

We’re just three days removed from Charlotte’s warmest February day on record, but winter is coming back with a vengeance to kick off the workweek. Lows have dipped into the teens and 20s across the board this Monday morning as northwesterly flow snow continues to fall in the High Country. Expect the flakes to linger through much of the day in our mountain counties, with most locations above 3500′ receiving 3-6″+ total. The Piedmont & Foothills, meanwhile, will get in on a sunny and chilly day with temperatures in the mid-40s. Highs will rise closer to 50° around the Metro on Tuesday as the bright skies stick around.

More clouds and above-average temperatures return by midweek as southwesterly winds push warmer air into the Carolinas. Highs will likely hang around the mid-60s through the final two days of the workweek in the Queen City. Our best shot for rain arrives Thursday into Friday as an expansive storm system approaches from the northwest, but it doesn’t look like this will be the deluge so many spots across the Carolinas so desperately need. Temperatures will likely continue to warm into the weekend, despite the passage of a cold front; highs may approach 70° again in Charlotte by Sunday.
