UNC Board of Governors approves to increase in-state undergraduate tuition for new students

The UNC Board of Governors approved Thursday to increase in-state undergraduate tuition for the first time in nine years.

The 3% increase, averaging about $125 per student, will bring the average tuition from $4,684 to $4,809 in 2026-27. This will only apply to new students, and current students will not see a change in their tuition.

“Low tuition is at the heart of our compact with the people of North Carolina,” said UNC System President Peter Hans. “We’re focused on reducing administrative costs, keeping student debt down, and making sure every UNC degree delivers value for our graduates.”

The board also voted to increase mandatory student fees by 1% in 2026-27. The combined annual tuition and fees will average $7,644 next academic year across 12 non-NC Promise universities.

In-state undergraduate tuition for NC Promise schools will stay the same at $500 per semester.
