Multiple controlled burns lead to smoky, hazy skies across Charlotte area

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Smoky skies Thursday across the Queen City. Many people noticed skies turn hazy and the smell of burning brush early Thursday afternoon.

We asked, and officials from several counties tell WCCB Charlotte it was all because of several controlled burns happening across our area.

People we talked to at Freedom Park say they’d like to have had more no notice. Resident Tim Moore says, “Especially if people aren’t really aware. They can’t control it, you know, and you have to breathe regardless. It’s like we have no choice, you know? The kids are out here, they have been coughing a couple times, a little bit. So that’s a little concerning.”

In total, five controlled burns spanning multiple counties contributed to all that smoke across our area.
