Deputies Seize Nearly 2 Pounds Of Crystal Meth After High Speed Pursuit

UNION COUNTY, NC — A 31-year-old Hickory man accused of trafficking large amounts of crystal meth is facing multiple charges after a high speed chase Friday night.

Deputies say they started pursuing Adolfo Almanza after he committed a traffic violation near the roundabout at Potter Road and Waxhaw-Indian Trail Road and refused to stop. The chase reached speeds up to 80mph as officials say Almanza weaved his Cadillac Escalade through traffic, crossing the center line on several occasions.

Almanza eventually led deputies into the Bromley Estates subdivision off Hemby Road, and took off on foot after ditching his vehicle near a wooded area behind the homes.

Deputies quickly caught up to Almanza, but say they were forced to use a taser in order to place him under arrest. Neither Almanza or the deputy were injured in the incident.

A two pound bag of crystal meth was also located after officials say it was thrown from Almanza’s vehicle during the chase.

He is charged with two counts of Trafficking Methamphetamine, Felony Speeding to Elude, Resist/Delay/Obstruct an Officer, Injury to Real Property, and several traffic violations.

Almanza has been placed under a $1,025,000 secured bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for May 8.
