CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. — A grand jury will now decide whether NASCAR driver Tony Stewart will face charges after he hit and killed a fellow driver on a racetrack in August.
Stewart’s stock car struck Kevin Ward Jr at a dirt track in New York. Ward was rushed to a local hospital but died from his injuries.
Prior to the fatal accident, Ward, who was wearing a black firesuit and black helmet, got out of his stock car and walked onto the track to confront Stewart. It appeared Ward was upset with Stewart for causing him to crash a lap before he was fatally struck by Stewart’s car.
Evidence collected by local officials will be presented to the grand jury.
Stewart released a statement that said, “There aren’t words to describe the sadness I feel about the accident that took the life of Kevin Ward Jr.”
