INDIAN LAND, S.C. – A 63-year-old woman died after being hit by her own car, according to the Lancaster County Coroner’s Office.
It happened Wednesday evening in the parking lot of Madison Ridge Apartments in Indian Land, South Carolina.
Officials said Margaret McWeeney exited her vehicle after stopping, but was unaware that it was still in reverse. When it began to roll backward, she re-entered the vehicle but accidentally pressed the gas pedal instead of the brake.
The vehicle accelerated in reverse, collecting the driver and striking several cars nearby before coming to a stop, the coroner’s office said.
McWeeney was pronounced dead at the scene.
This incident is under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol and the Lancaster County Coroner’s Office.
