Charlotte-based non profit works to serve those who’ve served us

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A Charlotte-based nonprofit is continuing its mission to serve those who served us.

The Independence Fund hosted its quarterly Feeding Independence event at the south Charlotte VA on Thursday. Veterans and their families got fresh food, personal hygiene supplies, and a hot meal. The organization says its mission goes beyond a single day of giving. Organizers say the goal is simple: make sure veterans and their families know they are supported and appreciated.

Independence Fund COO Doug Ackerman says, “The folks that come out here to an appointment at the VA or have registered online with us are extremely grateful. They love being recognized and appreciated for their service, and that’s what it’s all about.”

The Independence Fund says veterans and family members looking for assistance can find information on food programs, caregiver support, healthcare advocacy, and other services through the organization year-round.
