Driver killed, 2 injured after SUV runs red light at Catawba County intersection, troopers say

NEWTON, N.C. – One person died and two others were injured after a collision in Catawba County, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

It happened around 11:30 a.m. Thursday morning at the intersection of NC 16 and Buffalo Shoals Road. Troopers said a Hyundai Tucson ran a solid red light and collided with a Ford Explorer.

The Tucson driver, 22-year-old Sheck Kamara, died at the scene. A passenger in the vehicle was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Paramedics also transported the Ford driver, 19-year-old Noah Hocking, with non-life-threatening injuries.

Neither speed or impairment are believed to be contributing factors, troopers said.

No charges will be filed in this case.
