Local man plans boycott in response to news of YMCA closing & selling Morrison Y

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A local man is planning a boycott after the YMCA of Greater Charlotte announced it plans to close the Morrison YMCA. The Y has sold the property to Moments of Hope Church for $42.5 million. That’s where David Chadwick, formerly of Forest Hill, now pastors.

They say the church plans to redevelop the land into a new church campus and possible school.

J.D. Hopper says he’s organizing a mass boycott to try to convince the YMCA to re-consider. Hopper says, “It’s something that serves so many purposes that they are just taking away. It is indescribable what this place has meant to so many people. It is one of the best spots for affordable child care.”

The YMCA says the money from the sale will be re-invested into other programs including “enhancing” nearby YMCA facilities. The Morrison YMCA plans to close in summer 2027.
