New SC statue honors 16-year-old Revolutionary War heroine
TRAVELERS REST, S.C. – A South Carolina community is honoring a lesser known Revolutionary War heroine. A statue of Dicey Langston was dedicated in Travelers Rest on Friday.
Langston was just 16-years-old when she learned of British plans to attack her brother’s regiment. Historians say her warning saved them from almost certain death.
The statue was created by local artist Nick Ring. He says, “I like how it’s a force of nature. And that was the initial intention, that Dicey would be a force of nature, and on the move, and like the wind.”
Historians say Dicey took a 20-mile trek by foot, horse, and water to warn her brother’s regiment of the attack plans.
