UPDATE: The Catawba County Sheriff’s Office has identified the 16-year-old victim as Selena Seleste Lewis of Maiden.

NEWTON, N.C.– The Catawba County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a fatal shooting Sunday evening in Newton.
Officials say a 16-year-old girl was taking a picture of a 21-year-old man holding a gun when it fired, hitting her in the chest. The incident happened in the 2800 block of Rocky Ford Road.
The teen died before she could be airlifted to the hospital.
Officials believe the shooting was accidental.
