CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police have arrested one of their own. Officer Malcolm Joseph is charged with Simple Assault after police say he pushed someone off their bicycle on Friday, July 17 just after 2 AM. The person fell to the ground and sustained minor injuries.
CMPD says that after a “voluntary interview” with Officer Joseph, detectives got a warrant for his arrest. Joseph turned himself into the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.
He is now on unpaid leave while the department conducts internal and criminal investigations simultaneously.
Chief Estella Patterson says, “No one is above the law, especially those of us entrusted to uphold it. The alleged actions of this individual are troubling and does not reflect the values of our organization. CMPD is committed to building community trust through transparency and accountability.”
Joseph was hired on September 3, 2024, and is currently assigned to the Central Division. Joseph’s mugshot is not currently available on the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s online arrest records; we have asked CMPD when and if it will become available.
