Alleged theft of mementos from the demo site of the Excelsior Club

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A former owner of the Excelsior Club claims thieves stole memorabilia after the historic building was torn down earlier this week. Ken Koontz says someone cut the fence and broke into the demolition site, stealing remnants set aside as souvenirs.

Kennedy Properties and Development plans to replace the former 1944 landmark with an $8 million near-replica.

Police say they are not aware of a report being filed about the alleged break-in.
