2 drivers charged in fatal 4-vehicle Matthews crash

MATTHEWS, N.C. – Two men are facing charges in connection to a deadly four-vehicle crash in Matthews that happened earlier this month, according to the Matthews Police Department.

Following an investigation, police arrested Xiukuai Zhang and Ryan Faulkner on Monday. Zhang was charged with felony hit and run resulting in death. Faulkner was charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle and failure to yield the right of way.

Around 9:30 p.m. on July 1, police responded to East John Street and McKee Road. Upon arrival, officers discovered a serious crash involving four cars.

One of the vehicles was a motorcycle and the driver, later identified as 40-year-old Jonathan Hill, was found unresponsive at the scene. He received life-saving measures but was pronounced dead at the scene.

Another person was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

After a thorough investigation, police said there was probable cause to charge Zhang and Faulkner in connection to the crash.

Police did not reveal the events leading up to the crash.
