Mecklenburg County faith leaders protest homelessness bill

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A group of faith leaders in Mecklenburg County is urging state lawmakers to uphold Governor Josh Stein’s veto of House Bill 437. The proposed bill would outlaw unauthorized camping on public property and force cities and counties to clear encampments.

Faith groups warn the rules punish the unhoused, and Governor Stein called the measure a poorly constructed, unfunded mandate.

One faith leader says, “We find the bill to be inhumane, callous in its treatment of the homeless, and it makes the work of homeless providers more difficult and demand solutions without providing any funding.”

Republican supporters plan to override the veto, arguing the law addresses public safety and helps move individuals into stable housing. The General Assembly returns to session on August 3.
