CMS goes back to class for first day of school

CHARLOTTE, N.C.– It’s back to school for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools — and that means the buses are rolling! CMS says about 858 school buses are hitting the road across the district Tuesday, serving roughly 72,000 students and making stops at about 25,500 locations.

With more than 144,000 CMS students returning to the classroom, Superintendent Dr. Crystal Hill is also back at work after spending nearly two months on paid leave during this summer’s investigation.

On August 11th, the school board voted to reinstate Hill, saying her return was the correct move for stability and continuity. Board members say an independent review did identify concerns involving leadership and operational practices that will require continued attention, but the specific findings have not been publicly released.

Monday night, ahead of the first day of school, Dr. Hill released a video thanking CMS employees for their hard work and dedication as the district begins the new school year.

Board members will take up a motion at tonight’s meeting that could determine if details about the investigation will be made public.
