CHARLOTTE, NC — A prayer debate in Lincoln County. In May, the commission chair said he only wanted Christian prayer at public meetings.
The ACLU said that violated freedom of religion, so commissioners agreed to allow anyone who worships in the county to pray at meetings. The first Islamic prayer will be heard on Monday.
“They don’t have to agree with Islam; they don’t have to like Islam. But they have to understand that Muslims live in Lincoln County and that they represent our interests,” said Lincolnton resident Duston Barto.
In order for religions other than Christianity to pray at the commission meetings, they have to worship in the county.
