Former Newton Police officer who kicked and shot suspect after they surrendered will spend up to 10 years in prison

NEWTON, N.C. – A former Newton Police Lieutenant will spend eight to 10 years in prison for second-degree murder.

29-year-old Carlos Uribe pleaded guilty earlier this year to shooting and killing 21-year-old motorcyclist Camden Childers after a traffic stop, chase and fight in June 2025. A judge sentenced him on Wednesday.

The SBI determined Uribe kicked and shot Childers after he surrendered and was no longer a threat.
