Suicide Prevention Month highlights mental health risks for men

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — September is Suicide Prevention Month, bringing renewed attention to a significant disparity in suicide deaths in the United States: Men account for nearly 80% of those deaths.

Harvard Medical School psychologist Dr. David Alperovitz spoke with WCCB Rising about factors that can put men at greater risk, warning signs that may be overlooked and why some men are reluctant to seek help.

Alperovitz also discussed how friends and family members can start conversations with someone they are concerned about and the importance of seeking professional help when needed.

Anyone experiencing a mental health crisis can call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
