Mecklenburg Co. DA requests criminal investigation into Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, citing financial irregularities
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The State Bureau of Investigation is launching a criminal probe into Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Mecklenburg County District Attorney Spencer Merriweather formally requested the investigation on Friday, citing alleged financial irregularities within the district.
The probe follows an informal inquiry launched last month into transactions beginning in fiscal year 2026 and into fiscal year 2027 (which started July 1, 2026). The SBI will look for evidence of legally-prohibited transactions.
The DA emphasized that the request is not limited to a single person and does not confirm any wrongdoing. His office will not comment further during the investigation.
