July Hit And Run Victim Dies From Injuries

CHARLOTTE, NC — CMPD says the victim of a July 14th hit and run accident in west Charlotte has died from injuries.

Perry Wayne Smith, 60, died Monday morning from injuries sustained in the accident, according to officials. CMPD says they are still looking for the suspect responsible for the accident.

Police say the suspect vehicle is described as a large black SUV, possibly a Chevrolet Tahoe, with possible damage to the right side-view mirror and/or a scrape down the right side. It was last seen traveling towards Freedom Drive on Moores Chapel Road.

Around 8:10pm on July 14th, police say Smith was riding his bicycle on Moores Chapel Road when the SUV’s side mirror clipped Smith on the left arm and kept on going. Smith reportedly did not contact police about the incident until the following day, however.

Smith told police he knocked to the ground after being hit on his right side and mid-torso by the bicycle’s handlebars.

Investigators say they could not find any physical evidence at the reported crash site.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
