Hundreds of Florence Evacuees Set Up at Charlotte Motor Speedway
CHARLOTTE, NC — More than 400 people spent Friday night in 12 Red Cross shelters in our area, and that number is expected to increase. Five of the shelters are at Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools.
More than 250 evacuees have set up temporary quarters at Charlotte Motor Speedway. They are staying on the highest part of the grounds. Speedway officials say they could move people under the grandstands or into bath houses if the grounds flood this weekend.
Mike Salamino left everything behind at his home near Jacksonville: “We were able to have a place to stop, be safe, out of the elements, with what may be our only home when we get home.”
