According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, the 3-year-old child exited the home without adults knowing and walked down the driveway to the shoulder of the road.
A passing motorist saw the child and began to pull over, but the child darted into the road before the motorist could reach the child.
Authorities say the child, who was wearing dark clothing, was initially struck by one vehicle and then another. Both drivers stopped at the scene.
At this time, no charges are being filed.

CLEVELAND COUNTY, N.C. — A child was hit and killed in Cleveland County early Wednesday.
According to emergency officials, a child was struck by a car a little after 6 a.m. on S. Post Road.
The road is shut down in both directions.
Officials have not said the child’s age or how the accident happened.
Motorists are advised to take Hamrick Road to Sluphur Springs Road.
It is unknown at this time if charges will be filed.
Highway Patrol is investigating the fatal accident.
