Burke County Death Investigation Ruled Homicide Following Autopsy

CONNELLY SPRINGS, NC — Burke County deputies are now investigating a homicide after a man was found dead during a welfare check Tuesday night.

Investigators say 69-year-old Robert Biggerstaff was found dead around 9pm on Sugarloaf Road. The case was originally opened as a death investigation, according to officials, but became a homicide following the results of an autopsy.

On Wednesday, around 6pm, authorities with the Burke County and Caldwell County Sheriff’s Offices, along with the SBI, say they arrested 52-year-old Cathy Chapman, of Granite Falls, in connection to the case.

Chapman was reportedly in possession of Biggerstaff’s stolen vehicle.

Investigators have not released any information on how Biggerstaff died, or whether Chapman is a suspect in his murder.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Burke County Sheriff’s Office at 828-438-5500 or Crime Stoppers at 828-437-3333.
