The original statue was at the prominent intersection in Myers Park for 17 years but was missing for nearly a year after a car crashed into it.

McManaway would help direct traffic at the intersection during the 1960’s and 1970’s.  He died in 1989.  The statue was created several years after McManaway’s death.  His sisters, who were involved in the art scene in the Charlotte area, pushed to get it erected.  Hugh McColl helped fund the project.

The statue is often decorated by people in the community to help celebrate Panthers’ wins, weddings and other events.
