Driver Charged With DWI After Woman Is Hit And Killed While Getting Her Mail

SALISBURY, NC — A Salisbury woman is charged with DWI after investigators say she hit and killed another woman getting her mail late Tuesday afternoon.

Shortly after 5:30pm, authorities say Tasheka Barnes, 29, crossed the center line on Airport Road and ran off the side of the road. The victim, 34-year-old Sonya Dalton, was reportedly getting her mail from the mailbox when she was hit by Barnes’ 2001 Honda.

Officials say Dalton was pronounced dead on scene.

Barnes showed signs of impairment, according to officials, and was charged with DWI. Investigators say they’re consulting with the District Attorney to determine if additional charges will be filed.
