Multiple Suspects Steal Vehicles, Lead Police On Two Pursuits Across Charlotte

UPDATE: CMPD has charged 24-year old Daniel Swaringen and 35-year old Delvacchio Mills in connection with this assault, robbery and pursuit. A third suspect is still on the run.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police are investigating an armed robbery, assault and double pursuit that occurred in south Charlotte late Wednesday.

Officers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department were called around 11:30 p.m. to the 700 block of Leahurst Court where they located an adult male victim who said he stopped by a home to visit a friend.

The victim told police when he arrived at the house, he noticed a U-Haul truck in the driveway and three adult male suspects who were attempting to burglarize the home.

The resident of the house was not home at the time of the incident, police say.

Authorities say the male suspects assaulted the victim who was hit with a firearm, but not shot. The suspects then stole the victim’s 2011 BMW. Two of the suspects left in the car while the third suspect drove away in the U-Haul truck.

Medic transported the victim to a hospital where he is being treated for non-life threatening injuries he received during the robbery.

A CMPD officer located the victim’s BMW and attempted to conduct a traffic stop as it was traveling on I-485. The suspects refused to stop and a vehicle pursuit began. Within a few minutes, the BMW crashed as it exited off of I-485 onto Blair Road. Both of the occupants in the stolen BMW ran from the scene. One suspect was caught and apprehended by police.

The second suspect has not yet been located. He is described as an adult black male and was last believed to be in the area of Rocky River High School.

Stolen items belonging to the homeowner have been recovered from inside the vehicle.

Around 1:50 a.m., another CMPD officer spotted the U-Haul truck used in this crime traveling on West Boulevard at Donald Ross Road. Officers followed the truck until it ended up on Independence Boulevard at Wallace Road. Police attempted a traffic stop, but the driver refused to stop and a second vehicle pursuit began.

During this chase, the truck cut through a shopping center parking lot and hit a light pole, but no other vehicles were involved and no one was injured.  The pursuit continued until the suspect pulled into the Circle K located at 4921 E. Independence Blvd. He then surrendered to police.

The suspects’ names will be released once they have been formally charged at the Magistrate’s office.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
