Lime Bike Rider Dies From Injuries After Being Hit Near Uptown Last Week

CHARLOTTE, NC — CMPD says the rider of a Lime Bike bicycle that was hit by a vehicle last Wednesday has died from injuries.

Matthew Hoffman, 40, reportedly died around 6:15pm Sunday from injuries sustained during an accident on E. Morehead Street by the Uptown Cabaret around 12:30am on November 21st.

According to investigators, Hoffman was traveling southeast when he started to make a right turn but then “abruptly” turned back left into the path of a vehicle.

Hoffman was hit by 38-year-old Freweini Araya’s 2015 Honda SUV, police say, which then hit the side of the Uptown Cabaret building. Araya was not injured in the accident.

Police say Hoffman was not wearing a helmet and was possibly impaired at the time of the accident.

Neither speed nor alcohol/drug use were contributing factors on the part of Araya, according to investigators.

The investigation is ongoing.
