MONROE, N.C. — Police say a Monroe Middle School student was hit and killed by a train Tuesday night.
Monroe Police say they responded to Walkup Avenue around 8pm and found 13-year-old Carlos Rodriguez deceased on the railroad tracks.Β Officials say Rodriguez was struck by a train but not at a specific train crossing.
He was first reported missing after he left his home around 5:40pm, according to a news release.
Union County Public Schools have extra support available for students as well as staff and have extra counselors available for those in need.
βThis is a very sad situation,β said Monroe Police Chief Bryan Gilliard. βOur thoughts and prayers go out to all the family, friends and classmates during this very difficult time.β
Monroe Police will continue to conduct interviews with potential witnesses as they piece together what led to the accident.
