CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department says a man died after his vehicle was struck by a garbage truck when he drove the wrong way on S. Tryon Street, on Saturday afternoon.
At about 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 30th, CMPD officers responded to a wreck in the 9900 block of S. Tryon Street.
Officers found 33-year-old Colby Charles Davis unresponsive in a 2005 Toyota Camry that had been involved in the accident. Mr. Davis was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the 2001 Mack 600 garbage truck, which was also involved in the collision, was uninjured.
Investigators determined Mr. Davis turned left onto S. Tryon Street from Nevada Boulevard and began traveling against traffic, southbound, in the northbound lane.
Mr. Davis attempted to cross the center grass median but was struck by the Mack truck traveling north before he could do so.
Speed was not a factor for either driver, but investigators believe alcohol use was a factor for Mr. Davis. Both drivers were wearing their seatbelts.
The incident is still under investigation and anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Buckley with the Major Crash Investigations Unit at 704-432-2169, extension 6.
