CLAREMONT, NC — Catawba County Animal Services says they have confirmed the county’s third case of rabies so far this year.
On March 28th, officials say a fox got into an altercation with two dogs at a Clarement home. The animal was captured and sent for testing at the NC Public Health Laboratory in Raleigh.
On Monday, health officials confirmed that the fox tested positive for rabies.
Both dogs involved in the fight were up to date on vaccinations, according to Catawba County officials, and the owners have been advised to seek the recommended boosters within 96-hours of exposure.
According to a release, common signs that an animal may be infected with rabies include loss of appetite, irritability and unusual aggression, lack of fear and restlessness, dilated pupils, seizures, trembling and unsteadiness, difficulty swallowing, and drooling or foaming at the mouth. People who encounter an animal with any of these symptoms should avoid contact.
Anyone who sees an animal they feel may be infected with rabies should report it immediately to Catawba County Animal Services at 828-464-7686.
