Police Say Student Behind Hough High Social Media Threat Brought Air Soft Gun To School

MECKLENBURG COUNTY, N.C. — Police say a student at Hough High School is accused of bringing an air soft gun to campus and then posting a cryptic message on social media.

Adam Smith has been charged with Misdemeanor Possession of a Firearm on School Grounds. Police say Smith brought the gun to school on Wednesday and was showing it to other students.

On Thursday night, investigators say Smith then posted the following message to social media:

In a release Friday afternoon, police said “the social media post was not threatening in nature” but they continued to investigate, which led them to information about Smith bringing the gun to campus earlier in the week.

Friday morning, Principal Laura Rosenbach shared the following message about the post with the families of students at Hough High School:

“Good morning Hough families. This is Dr. Laura Rosenbach. I wanted to let you know that I received information about an inappropriate social media post last night. CMS police and I have identified and addressed the situation. Please know safety is my top priority and take these incidents very seriously. I want to thank everyone who alerted us to this situation. Thank you and have a good day.”

Cornelius Police say the Davidson Police Department and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department assisted in the investigation.
