NEW YORK (AP) β Derek Jeter’s final hit at Yankees Stadium was a walkoff single that gave New York a 6-5 win over Baltimore. Jeter was mobbed on the infield by his present teammates and greeted at the dugout by former teammates after he finished the game 2-for-5 with three RBIs and a run scored. He hit .353 with nine RBIs and five runs scored in 34 at-bats during the eight-game homestand after his average dropped to .249.
CINCINNATI (AP) β The San Francisco Giants clinched a berth in the NL wild-card game when the Milwaukee Brewers lost 5-3 in Cincinnati yesterday. The Brewers were a season-high 19 games over .500 on June 28, when they led the National League Central by 6 Β½ games over St. Louis. They still enjoyed a three-game lead on August 17 but have gone 11-23 since then.
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) β A law enforcement official tells The Associated Press the video of former Ravens running back Ray Rice punching his fiancee inside a casino elevator was sent to NFL headquarters to the attention of league security chief Jeffrey Miller in April. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to release details of the case. He said he doesn’t know if Miller ever saw the DVD or opened the package.
LANDOVER, Md. (AP) β The New York Giants rolled to a 45-14 rout of Washington as Eli Manning threw for 300 yards and four touchdowns while running for another score. Larry Donnell entered the game with one career touchdown reception before getting three in the first half. Victor Cruz added six catches for 108 yards, his second consecutive 100-yard game for the 2-2 Giants.
GLENEAGLES, Scotland (AP) β The U.S. and Europe have begun the latest edition of the Ryder Cup in Gleneagles, Scotland. Europe is the Cup holder after a stunning rally in the singles matches two years ago at Medinah. That gave them seven Cup wins in the last nine meetings.
