A third American Ebola patient with ties to the Charlotte area is out of the hospital Thursday night.

Dr. Rick Sacra was released from Nebraska Medical Center Thursday after being declared Ebola free.  He contracted the virus while delivering babies in Liberia.  Sacra is from Boston, and joined Charlotte-based SIM USA in the 1980s.

Sacra thanked Samaritan’s Purse doctor Kent Brantly, who also survived Ebola, for helping with his recovery.  “I appreciate Dr. Kent Brantly, my dear colleague and friend, for his willingness to come all the way here to donate his plasma to help in my recovery,” said Sacra.

Dr. Sacra volunteered to go to Liberia to take Brantly’s place when he became infected with the Ebola virus.  More than 2,900 people have died from Ebola this year.
