CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A fire that was intentionally set at the FAA air traffic control facility in Chicago caused hundreds of flight delays Friday.
All flights in and out of Chicago’s two airports were stopped.
U.S Airways, American Airlines and Regional Airlines cancelled 300 flights systemwide after the fire was set around 6 a.m.
Charlotte Douglas cancelled four flights to O’Hare International Airport in Chicago. The airport says the passengers will be rebooked when O’Hare is reopened.
Emergency crews found the man who they believe set the fire in the basement of the facility in Aurora. The man had a self-inflicted wound and was taken to the hospital.
The center was evacuated and one employee was treated for smoke inhalation.
No word on any charges or how long the flight stoppage will last.
Charlotte Douglas Airport says their only advice is to go online and check your flight status.
